High on the Antarctic Plateau, 13,000 feet above sea level, there is a  place that is extremely cold and extremely dry. Here there is only ice. There is no wind. There are no animals. This is Ridge A. Due to the unique atmospheric conditions, it is the best place on Earth to observe distant galaxies.

This quiet, lyrical piece calls for the developing players to demonstrate their legato technique; long bows, and smooth bow changes. The violins play the natural harmonics, a useful exercise for students just learning to shift. Since this piece depicts a land of ice, it is a good selection for a winter concert.
